Chapter Twelve: A promise, for the Dead.

The waters around the Albhed ship were dark, as were the skies above our ship, as we entered the waters around the now abandoned and desolate Baaj Temple.

"Looks really creepy, doesn’t it Tidus?" Shawna said as the two came up behind me. "I mean, this place is nothing but ruins."

"Yeah, it is creepy, but this is where we found the Aeon Anima. It really is too bad, that Anima used to be Seymore’s mother, she seemed really nice. Even if she was a Fayth." Tidus commented as the two stood leaning on the rail next to me. "Tina, you might be visited by Anima here." Tidus said as an after thought.

"Huh, oh yeah, sure." I said as I stared at what was left of the Baaj temple. "What happened here?" I asked as the ship pulled closer to a set of steps which led to nothing but a few thin rock bridges, that spanned a circular space where the Temple had probabaly stood before being submerged into the water.

"Don’t know Tina, but I suspect Sin attacked this place at one point. It’s the only reason why this place would be like that." Tidus said as he hung his head and looked at the waters below the Albhed Ship. "This is the place, where I almost got eaten by a fiend." He whispered.

"Oh, that must have been so horrifying!" Shawna said as she hung off Tidus’s arm, pouting with just enough cuteness to make me want to gag. "How did you manage to escape?" She asked as I shrugged my shoulders and tuned them out. I had more important things to think about, such as what was on the ship, that was now a bunch of floating debris while the rest of it was probably under the waters of the Baaj Temple Ocean.

What would we find? Would we find a ships log, perhaps some old Machina, or even a sphere? I could not really tell, yet I had an odd feeling that we would find something, and that it would add a whole new can of worms.

As I stood there thinking about this stuff, Shawna and Tidus continued to talk about his first Night in Baaj Temple, and how he had met Rikku. I only half listened, my mind on other things.

None of us were paying attention to tell the truth, and none of us even imagined that what would happen next would be something that none of us would forget. At least, I wouldn’t. Not for a very long time.

The Albhed Ship was docked against the steps, and as various crew members of the Albhed ship made prepreations to make camp on the sight, I remained looking into the waters, as did Tidus as he continued to talk to Shawna.

I don’t know if we saw it at the same time, but we both reacted the same as the large creature with glowing orbs of light, on the end of green like tentacles hit the underside of the Ship as it passed below. We both grabbed onto the rail, and using our free hands, grabbed onto the nearest person to make sure they wern’t thrown overboard, as the ship rocked on the water trying to settle. I Grabbed onto Tidus, and he, made sure Shawna was safe and sound.

"What the hell was that!?" Shawna screamed as I turned my head and looked back down into the waters, watching as it circled around and made it’s way back to the ship.

"Looks like a Fiend," I said, "and it looks like it’s comming in for another attack!"

"That’s not just any ordinary fiend, Tina." Tidus said as he gripped the sides of the railing as the Albhed Ship rocked back and forth as it got hit again. "That’s exactly like the Fiend that tried to eat me four years ago!"

"Huh, I thought you said...?" Shawna cut in as she flew backwards into my outstreched arm as Tidus bent down to pick up his Sword.

"Yeah, yeah, Wakka, Rikku, and I killed it before we took on Sin, it’s how we were able to get Lulu’s Onion Knight, and the Aeon Anima."

"In other words, you’re saying that this is a diffrent Fiend but the same Type, right?" I asked as I pulled Shawna with me along the deck, Tidus following as we made our way to the side that was next to the ground.

"Bingo." Tidus said. "We need to get most of the people on the ship onto the dry land, by the boarding sphere, and we need to do it as quickly as possible." Tidus said.

"Right. You take care of your girlfriend, I’m going to get the others." I said as I turned and headed towards the door to the lower cabins. I had just opened it when the others barged out, screaming in alarm, followed by Rikku, Yuna and Paine. "Guys, I think it’s best we get off the ship." I said as we heard a loud creaking noise. "Preferably before it starts to sink into the water!"

We had little time to react as the ship creaked loudly, as it pitched to the side again, and I lost my ballence, and slid along the deck my back hitting the rail. Grabbing it I screamed for the others to get off the ship, and that I would follow.

The others nodded and vacated the ship landing on the secure surface of the land, as the Ship started to sink. The only people on the ship were Tidus and myself.

"Tina! Come on, we’re the last ones." He said reaching out for my hand. Nodding I lurched forward making a grab for his hand, but missed as the ship was hit again, and more loud creakings could be heard. Losing my ballence I was again thrown back, but I didn’t slam into the rail, but went over it. Grabbing onto it with my hands I looked into the water, and saw the Fiend circling in again.

My heart lept into my throat as fear over came me. My grip was slipping, and the fiend was comming closer. Just when I thought I would drop, I felt a firm grip on my right wrist. Looking up, I looked right into the determined look on Tidus’s face.

"Tidus, let go!" I screamed. "You have to get off the ship, there isn’t any more time."

"No!" He said gritting his teeth. "You have to find the answers to your questions. I’m not going to let go, so help me." He was leaning down looking at me, the smile he reserved only for me, the girl next door, his best friend. "You’re my best friend Tina, I’m not letting you go. I’m going to see you through this quest of yours to the very end, so don’t you dare give up on me now."

I dropped further as the ship was hit again, and Tidus lurched forward over the railing, hanging on to my right wrist, his other hand holding onto the railing. He grunted at the strain and tried to pull me up, but lost his footing and I dropped another inch or so.

"Tidus! I’m too heavy for you! You’ll fall in too!" I screamed and sputtered as water washed over us. "Just let go! I can’t let you die. How would Shawna feel if you died?"

Tidus looked at me, his face scrunched up in a determined scowl. "She’d understand. I used to tell her a whole lot about you. Even about my promise to my mom, before she died. Don’t you remember, our promise to each other?"

Like a ton of bricks it hit me. The memory of when his mother died.

She was on her death bed, too weak to get up, and had no energy to live. Tidus and I, just mere kids at the time sat out on the back of his home where he lived and sat in silence. Not knowing what to say.

It was night, and the stars were so bright. Tidus was humming, the luluaby his mother used to sing to him before going to bed. It was, comforting. We sat like that for hours, till the sun rose.

Then and only then did the doctor come to fetch Tidus and I. Getting up, and feeling numb, we followed him inside, and into his mothers room.

His mother looked so frail and weak, yet she still held a smile for Tidus. Raising her hand she smiled at him, and then she looked at me. Her eyes soft, and beautiful. Yet they were sad.

"Hi." She said, as Tidus took her frail looking hand. "I wanted you both to see me, before.. before I.."

"Don’t talk like that Mom." Tidus said, his face looking determined. "You’ll get better. You have to."

"No.. I’m.. I’m dying Tidus." She said as she smiled ever so softly at him. "Now, I want you to do something for me Tidus, you too Tina. Neither of you have parrents. I know the old lady next door took Tina in, and I’ve made arrangements for Auron too look in on you from time to time, but he won’t be here all the time." She said, and paused to cough. "I want you two to promise me something." She said as she looked from Tidus and then to me. I was standing not far away, and she smiled again. "Tina come over here too, I can’t see you too well from here. It’s getting horribly dark."

Nodding I came forward, and the Doctor helped her lie down, and she took one of my hands, with the other.

"I want you to promise me..." She whispered as her eyes closed, and her breathing grew faint. "Promiseme, that you’ll look out for each other in the times to come. Always be friends, and..." she coughed again, and paused to gain her breath back, which was rapidly getting more fainter. "Never forget your friendship."

"Mom.." Tidus said, his eyes squeezes shut, his hand gripping her hand in both of his. "I promise. I’ll look out for Tina. I’ll keep this promise."

"Me too. I’ll never forget our friendship." I said as my voice choked and tears started to stream down my face. Letting go of her hand, I turned and burried my face in the doctors Shirt.

"Good. I am glad... Tina, Tidus, I want you both of you be strong, and don’t cry for me, I’ll die happily, I go to be with your father now.."

That’s when her hand went limp, and she died with a smile on her face.

"I promise mom." I heard Tidus say with choaked breathing. I knew he was crying like myself. All that could be heard in the deafining silence, and the chiming of the clock.

The boat lurched again and the deck was buckling under the powerfullness of the attacks.

"Come on, Tina!" Tidus shouted. "I have to keep my promise!" He said. "I’m not going to break it now!" He grunted as he tried to pull me up. His grip slipped, and I tried to grab his hand. All the while my eyes focusing on the look of sheer horror on his face, as our hands missed and I fell... Into the open maw of a fiend. I could clearly hear an anguished yell, as he leaned down his hand grasping at air.

"No! Tina!"

I was then covered in water, floating inside what looked like a cage. Clearly this was the belly of the Fiend, my mind screamed. Only Five minutes. I could only hold my breath for five minutes, and when that time ran out, I would surely drown! Yet I was helpless, I had no weapon to fight, and I had no idea how to get out!
